Just Like Humans, Rats Are Bestowed With Power To Imagine!

Just Like Humans, Rats Are Bestowed With Power To Imagine!

What sets humans apart from the rest of the animal kingdom is our prodigious ability to reason. But is it truly a human-unique feature or even our nonhuman relatives bless with this? Well, a new study on rational behavior in rats reveals that rats have the ability to link cause and effect such that they can expect, or imagine, something happening even if it isn’t.

This study paves way in order to understand human reasoning, especially in older adults, as ageing degrades the ability to maintain information about unobserved events, the researchers said.

Lead researcher Aaron Blaisdell of the University of California, Los Angeles, along with her other colleagues, stated that the recent study draws from long-understood ideas that when a rat (or dog or pigeon) observes one event followed by another, such as a tone followed by food, it forms an association between the events. And once the association is formed, whenever the rat hears the tone, it expects food to follow. The researchers added that the rat appears to believe that the tone causes the food.

Blaisdell also stated, “What I have shown in my research is that rats not only acquire these types of associations between two events, they can form a causal link between them as well.”

They also discovered that once rats observe two events together, it not only forms an association but also an expectation. For example, if two lights occur at the same time, a rat will expect one light to occur whenever the other one does. But even more remarkably, if researchers cover one of the lights so that the rat cannot see it and then the researchers present the other light, the rats take actions as though the hidden light might be on. According to Blaisdell, “They maintain an image or expectation that the light is present even though they can’t see it.”

“Rats, and many other nonhuman species, continue to provide a treasure trove of information about cognition and reasoning,” said Blaisdell. By merely looking at an animal is like looking into a mirror that reflects back a part of ourselves, he concluded.

Real estate market overview – North India

The real estate market in North India collectively has been seeing an upward trend. Though Delhi is experiencing a slowdown in the real estate market, its peripheral regions are in huge demand. Tier II cities around Delhi NCR (National Capital Region) like Chandigarh have seen steady growth in the realty sector owing to the expanding NCR. Earlier restricted to Gurgaon and Noida the real estate market has now moved along other districts of Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan.

NCR now covers 13 districts of Haryana with recent additions of Bhiwani, Mahendragarh, Jind and Karnal. It has also included Bharatpur district of Rajasthan. The NCRPB (National Capital Region Planning Board) has also identified Jaipur as a Counter Magnet Area.

Experts suggest that Mahendragarh (135 kms from Delhi) and Bhiwani (114 kms from Delhi) in Haryana and Bharatpur (220 kms from Delhi) in Rajasthan will see a 15% increase in property prices in the next 4 years.

Residential properties at one of the latest additions to NCR, Bharatpur is selling at INR 1500 per sq. ft. and the industrial plots are selling at INR 200 per sq. ft. Reports also suggest that the growing retail and financial sector in Bhiwani and Mahendragarh (Haryana) is helping real estate by creating opportunities.

Bhiwadi in Rajasthan has shown signs of fast development with well known builders like Avalon, Omaxe, and Ashiana developing townships in the area. Bhiwadi has been one of the fastest growing regions lately. Bhiwadi also boasts of rapid infrastructure development after the automobile giant Honda opened a production plant creating 10,000 jobs in the region.

According to the National Housing Bank (NHB) Residex, the real estate prices have shown a marginal rise in Q2 of 2013-2014 with Faridabad at 0.99% and Chandigarh at 0.53%.

Inversely a few areas have also seen a downfall in the prices with Meerut at a sharp decline of 6.88%, followed by Delhi, 4.53%; Ludhiana, 4.46% and Jaipur at 1.82%. Real estate prices at Dehradun were stagnant.

Developers have now moved to smaller towns because construction cost and approvals are becoming a huge hassle in areas like Delhi, Gurgaon and Noida real estate market. Also the economic slowdown is the metros have resulted in a lack of interest by the end users.

Recent reports also suggest that there is a strong demand for housing loans from the peripheral NCR region for the mid-segment properties.

The NCRPB provides soft loans to developers to the extent of 75 percent for infrastructure projects in NCR. Reports suggest that the board has already provided financial assistance to 277 projects worth INR 18,994 crores upto March 2013. In the Haryana sub-region of NCR, 106 projects have already been completed with an estimated cost of INR 4,683 crore apart from the 76 ongoing projects at an estimated cost of INR 9,238 crore with the financial assistance of NCRPB. The Haryana sub region has shown immense potential and growth in the region.

Gurgaon on the other had has shown exponential growth of 293 % in the past decade, the highest in the NCR region. Gurgaon and Noida remain a favourable real estate option for many with MNCs, corporate establishments and a range of retail units to cater to the growing population creating a steady demand for properties for sale in Delhi NCR. Luxury and mid-segment housing show high demand in this region. Though stagnant in the beginning of 2014, report suggests that the real estate market will pick up pace by the end of 2014.

Greater Noida is an educational and industrial hub showing great potential. The real estate prices have seen a reasonable amount of increase with the development of Buddh International Circuit and Yamuna Expressway. The Noida Expressway region, therefore offers a high price range of ready-to-move-in-units in 2014. Greater Noida properties seem to show a steady growth in prices.

Southern parts of Gurgaon offer a range of luxury apartments while the Golf Course Road and surrounding areas are a well-established real estate segment. Investment along the Dwarka Expressway is said be profitable as a long term investment option with all major builders developing projects in the region.

Ghaziabad still retains its position as a budget housing investment haven. Here the property prices are low compared to Gurgaon and Noida and is therefore a reasonable investment choice for many. Also, quite a few projects are under construction in the Rajnagar Extension area and along the National Highway 24.

Lucknow and Patna show a balanced real estate growth across all sectors; however Faridabad has shown a lot of promise owing to its proximity to Delhi and Gurgaon. The upcoming metro link and lower property value has attracted a lot of end users to this part of NCR. Faridabad’s Neharpar has emerged as a reasonably priced housing locality. Properties in Neharpar, also known as Greater Faridabad will turn out to be a great investment option.

WhatsApp Voice Calling Feature Spotted On IPhones

WhatsApp Voice Calling Feature Spotted On IPhones

There has been enough talk about the WhatsApp voice calling feature on Android. A new leak has revealed that this VoIP based calling feature could be making its way to the iOS version of the app as well. It was previously believed that WhatsApp calling was limited to Android devices, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
It is said that users can access this feature by pressing the dial button right next to a contact. However, this is still in beta, so it might not make its way to the full version of the app anytime soon.
The feature is being spotted on version of the app as of now. But we can’t be sure if all users with this version number will be able to make use of this feature right away.
Unlike Android, Apple doesn’t allow manual side loading of apps, so users will have to wait until WhatsApp officially brings the feature to their devices.
WhatsApp voice calling allows users to converse with their contacts more seamlessly rather than limiting themselves to short voice messages or texts. The UI is pretty simple with the ability to switch between voice calls and chat menus conveniently.
The addition of this feature might have a substantial impact on the likes of Viber, Skype etc which are currently some of the best VoIP apps available out there.
We’re guessing WhatsApp voice calling should work across platforms, so its functionality will probably not be limited to just Android and iOS.

So could there be a Windows Phone version of this feature? It’s hard to tell at the moment, but the WhatsApp application on the Windows Phone platform needs a lot of other upgrades and improvements before getting something like VoIP calling. [

Apple Watch Is Coming To India In June?

Apple Watch Is Coming To India In June?

Apple just held an event for the Apple Watch. But as it launched the thing last year, we got to hear about much more than just a few of the flimsy things Apple’s great wrist-worn gadget will do.

The Apple Watch goes on pre-order on April 10, and in the usual Apple style the actual ‘on sale’ date lands two weeks later on April 24. This is the standard delay Apple puts into its mobile devices. It’s enough of a gap to get you ravenous with excitement, no so long you forget you even made the pre-order.

Hands on: Apple Watch review | Hands on: New MacBook review

But sadly for us in India, our country does not feature in the list of first countries that will have Apple Watch. We are sure like us, you too might be wondering when will this watch make its way to India.

As PTI report suggests that June is the month when Apple Watch will be coming to Indian shores. This move might be a result of India’s growing popularity as an important market for many brands, including Apple.

California’s Wine Country Is Getting A Huge Floating Solar Farm

California’s Wine Country Is Getting A Huge Floating Solar Farm

California has long been on the cutting edge of solar power, and now it has what be its most interesting plan yet: a vast solar array floating on top of wastewater ponds. The project will be built in Sonoma County, which you may know better as wine country.

Greentech reports that Sonoma Clean Power will build solar panels on docks across six of the local water utility’s wastewater ponds. The 12.5-megawatt installation will provide enough electricity for 3,000 homes when it is expected to come online next year. It will be the biggest floating solar farm in the U.S.

Lately, floating solar farms have become a trendy idea around the world. Japan is building an even bigger one. India has a new one, too. Floating the solar panels over water has a dual advantage: The water provides natural cooling for the panels, and the panels prevent water evaporation.

If the floating solar farm works well in Sonoma County, there’s pretty of opportunity for expansion. As Greentech notes, there are some 1,400 irrigation storage ponds in Sonoma County, many of them on vineyards. The same sunshine that makes your grapes could soon be powering homes.

Eating At ‘Right’ Time Key To Healthy Heart

Eating At ‘Right’ Time Key To Healthy Heart

A new study has revealed that eating at the right time is as important as what the person is eating in order to maintain a healthy heart.

Researchers at San Diego State University and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies found that by limiting the time span during which fruit flies could eat, they could prevent aging-and diet-related heart problems.

The researchers also discovered that genes responsible for the body’s circadian rhythm are integral to this process, but they’re not yet sure how.

Previous research has found that people who tend to eat later in the day and into the night have a higher chance of developing heart disease than people who cut off their food consumption earlier.

The researchers also sequenced the RNA of the flies at various points in the experiment to find which of their genes had changed as a result of time-restricted feeding.

They identified three genetic pathways that appear to be involved: the TCP-1 ring complex chaperonin, which helps proteins fold; mitochondrial electron transport chain complexes (mETC); and a suite of genes responsible for the body’s circadian rhythm.

Girish Melkani, a biologist at SDSU whose research focuses on cardiovascular physiology was optimistic that the results could one day translate into cardiac- and obesity-related health benefits for humans.

The study is published in Science.

Top Five Health Concerns For Men Revealed

Top Five Health Concerns For Men Revealed

A new study has revealed the five most common health issues in men and how to prevent them.

Kevin Polsley of Loyola University said that a lot of men think going to the doctor is just one more thing on a seemingly endless “to do” list, but to get all those other “to dos” done men need to starting thinking about their health and making it a priority.

One of the top five health concerns for men is heart disease. Men have a higher risk of heart attacks than women and these risks increase when there is family history of the disease. Heart disease risks also increase if a man smokes, has high cholesterol, high blood pressure or diabetes.

Polsley said that exercise and diet are extremely important in preventing heart attacks. Routine preventive care appointments with a primary care physician also can help identify most of these risk factors, and modification and treatment of these risks factors can help decrease the risk as well.

Second is sleep apnea. It is estimated that 18 million Americans have sleep apnea but many aren’t tested for it. Subtle symptoms include snoring, waking up frequently in the night to urinate, headaches in the morning or waking up with a dry mouth.

Many men’s health issues can be helped if they take steps to manage their sleep apnea. Long-term complications from the disease include high blood pressure, heart failure, heart attacks and stroke, so it’s an important condition to diagnose and treat, said Polsley. Weight loss can help decrease this problem. Polsley recommends a sleep test to determine the cause of the sleep apnea and the best treatment.

Third is high blood pressure. Family history and obesity are two of the leading causes of high blood pressure. Weight loss can decrease the risk of developing the disease. A low-sodium diet also can help when battling high blood pressure. Many people think that means just avoiding salt, but it’s more than that; it’s a lifestyle.

Fourth is high cholesterol also has a strong genetic component. Still, a man can have high cholesterol even if there is no family history. Diet and exercise are key to preventing this disease. Diet and exercise are the best way to help prevent high cholesterol. If you have a family history or are concerned, eating fish or taking a fish oil supplement also has been shown to help prevent high cholesterol.

Fifth is colon cancer. Early detection is important for battling colon cancer so a colonoscopy should be done every 10 years after the age of 50 or earlier if there is a family history. If caught early, the prognosis for colon cancer is good. That is why everyone, men and women, should have routine colonoscopies. They may not be pleasant, but they can save your life, said Polsley.
