A BREATH OF FRESH AIR

With pollution at an-all time high, use plants at home as effective indoor air purifiers
Plants “breathe” in carbon dioxide and release oxygen. This is of utmost importance to maintain the delicate balance of the earth’s atmosphere. While this is a commonly known fact that takes us back to our elementary school science, a lesser-known fact is that plants can also be used to extricate harmful chemicals from the air we breathe inside our homes.

Studies conducted by NASA have unearthed that certain plants used as houseplants can act as “filters” to effectively remove toxins from indoor air and replace it with breathable oxygen.
Keeping in mind the fact that pollution levels are at an all time high and Diwali is round the corner, which along with its festivities has adverse environmental repercussions, pure breathable air in our own homes has never been more important.
The upside to this rather serious situation is that most of the plants are not only visually appealing, these are also easily available and require minimum care and maintenance. A few simple tips to beautify a corner in your house will simultaneously eliminate significant amounts of benzene, formaldehyde and other harmful substances.
For instance, Sansevieria, also known as mother-in-law’s tongue, is one of the best for filtering out formaldehyde, which is common in cleaning products, toilet paper, tissues and personal care products. Put one in your bathroom — it’ll thrive with low light and steamy humid conditions while helping filter out air pollutants.
Likewise, Dracaena Marginata (or red-edged Dracaena) is optimum for removing xylene, trichloroethylene and formaldehyde, which can be introduced to indoor air through lacquers, varnishes and gasoline. Additionally, the red edges of this plant add a pop of colour to any dull corner of the house.
Ficus Benjamina requires slightly more attention, but once you get the light and water conditions right, this plant can act as a powerful filter in your living room for pollutants released by carpeting and furniture.
Other easily available, aesthetically appealing plants that have great air purifying qualities are Areca Palm, Lady Palm, Dracaena Janet Craig, Bamboo Palm, Ficus Robusta, Philodendron and Ficus Alii. Plants can be worked into gardens and landscapes in a creative manner. Another helpful technique is to use coco-peat as a planting/potting medicine. It is a myth that gardens consume “too” much water – logical watering patterns not only safeguard the natural resource but add to the ecological growth of a garden- no plant likes excessive water anyway.
Use eco-friendly potting techniques for indoor and outdoor purposes – the air has so many pollutants each one of us must try and do our bit. The author is a luxury exteriors designer with over a decade- anda-half experience in landscaping, garden design and beautification projects

Facebook Could Soon Have A Fix For Annoying Candy Crush Requests

While Facebook is a great place to converse with friends and enjoy a decent virtual social life, it’s not without its annoyances. The social media platform started the apps and games service a few years ago, which has now grown into a multi-million dollar enterprise.

However, there are some users out there who are not really looking to spend time on these services while accessing Facebook. So naturally when they receive requests to start playing or using an app/game, it can come across as irritating. This has long been a pertinent complaint among the users and Facebook is yet to quell this menace.

The company CEO Mark Zuckerberg who was answering questions at the Delhi Townhall event today has mentioned that the company will be doing something about this soon. While he failed to divulge information on what exactly will be done to get rid of this, it’s good to know that the CEO is acknowledging this as a concern for the customers.

He said “This is why townhall is so great. Our team is working with developers to come up with a solution to stop Candy crush requests. We are doing it!”

Apps like Candy Crush, Farmville etc have millions of daily users out there. And in order to increase the user base, the developers tend to force players into sending invites to their friends, usually in return for perks like coins or other virtual currency. Perhaps Facebook can block this altogether so requests cannot be sent to the users. The details are still pretty hazy, so we’ll wait for further clarification from Facebook before jumping to conclusions.

Do You Really Need An IPhone 6S?

The latest iPhone, iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus went on sale last week in India. As always, there were several Apple enthusiasts who stood in queues outside the Apple retail stores at midnight to pick the new iPhones. In fact, the craze was such that Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, took to Twitter to personally thank the fans from India.

For a layman, who is not a power user and not into a lot of gaming or requires powerpuff performance, the iPhone 6S basically is about three things: a new rose gold color, a better camera, and 3D Touch. If your heart is set on the rose gold version of the iPhone, then there is no alternative but to pick the device. While the camera on the iPhone 6s is definitely better than that of the 6, it is not something that you would sweat upon.I If you are coming from an older device, chances are that the cameras on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus would anyway be an upgrade. Then comes 3D Touch. And if you just want a new iPhone for 3D Touch, then that is a problem that can be solved easily.
The 3D Touch basically is the mimic of Force Touch that Apple introduced with the launch of its Macbook and Apple Watch. It enables users to press long on the display to trigger actions like opening contextually relevant options to take you inside an application on your phone, seeing a preview of your text messages or pictures before you decide to open the message or image and simply use it to change weapons during a gameplay. It is common knowledge that the jailbreaking community has always empowered users to go ahead and make choices that give them a way out of the strict and high walls of the disciplinarian that Apple has been. Initially, Apple was really wary of the jailbreak community and took an active stand against them, but the same has softened a bit off late. This is why the jailbreak community has come up with a solution, that if you are looking to pick the iPhone 6S for just 3D Touch or Live Photos, then they can save a lot of money for you.

iPhone 6S, 6S Plus India launch: Bookings miss target

Apple’s aggressive sales strategy in India may have backfired to some extent as bookings for the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus have fallen short of expectations, said some of the company’s trade partners. Against a bold target of tripling pre-bookings for the devices, which will be available in India on October 16, these have risen by just 10-15% compared with last year for the previous models, the partners said. They said buyers expect lower prices online once the phone becomes widely available.
Thanks to lower online prices, Apple’s ambitious sales target for the new generation of devices could still eventually be met. Earlier this year, Apple had allowed its distributors to sell at the lowest price to the e-commerce channel, leading to a surge in sales after having followed a conservative line that meant all vendors had to hold their rates at the company-mandated level.

Go Find Out If Your IPhone Has A Good Or A Bad Processor

s it turns out, not all new iPhones are created equal. There’s two different versions of the A9 processor, and while they’re mostly the same, one of the chips seems to be killing battery life. s Anantech noted shortly after the phone’s launch, there are two different A9 chips: one made by Samsung on a 14nm process, and one (slightly bigger) by TSMC. Apple sourced the chips from two manufacturers in an attempt to reduce the supply problems that are normally a hallmark of iPhone launches.

But the two chips don’t work exactly the same. Although they benchmark with about the same power, the battery life (and excess heat) is different. According to posts on forums and some Chinese sites, phones with the TSMC processor get two hours more battery life on the Geekbench battery test, while running a few degrees cooler.

Obviously, that’s not definitive-not least because battery test apps tax processors in a particular way, which doesn’t accurately reflect real life. If you want to find out which processor is in your shiny new phone, the easiest way is to download the free Lirum Device Info Lite app, and look at the model number on the main page. N66AP (6s Plus) or N71AP (6s) means a Samsung chip (and supposedly lower battery life), while N66MAP or N71MAP means the TSMC chip, and some peace of mind.

5 Things You Need To Know About Renault Kwid

Kwid? What’s a Kwid?

Renault – the French carmaker that got us the Duster, Scala, Fluence and Koleos – has set its sights on the entry-level segment with their latest offering. And that offering we speak of is the Kwid.

How does it look?

Very good actually! It looks like a small SUV, which is pretty good considering that the other cars in its segment are Maruti Suzuki Alto and Hyundai Eon. On pure visual quality, let’s just say it’s clearly the best looking car in that segment.

What’s it like on the inside?

Spacious is the first thing that comes to mind. The Kwid offers good legroom, as compared to the other cars in the segment. Moreover it offers 300 litres of boot space, which means you can store actual luggage in it, and not just your gym bag or groceries.
The front panel comes with a premium-looking in-car entertainment system, with a 7-inch touchscreen display, with bluetooth and aux support. There are even power windows on offer.

Tell me about the engine

There’s that spanking-new 799cc petrol engine that produces 53bhp of power and 72Nm of torque. It’s mated to a 5-speed gearbox. Renault claims that the car gives a mileage of 25.17kpl – another best in class feature.

IPhone 6S Plus: Everything You Need To Know About Apple’s More Powerful Monster

The iPhone 6 Plus changed the way people used the world’s finest smartphone. Now, Apple is making the jumbo phone even better with a faster processor, newfangled 3D Touch capabilities, and a revamped camera. This is the iPhone 6S Plus, and it looks predictably terrific.

Design

The new iPhone 6s Plus looks just like the old 6S Plus, but it’s made of different stuff. The aluminum used is the same 7000 alloy that’s used in the Apple Watch, and it’s stronger, so hopefully you can stop worrying about bending the big old thing. The new iPhone 6S Plus will also come in a rose gold color, as well as the classic silver, gold, and space grey.

Apple promises a new type of glass is stronger than the old generation, and the 5.5-inch touchscreen features capabilities, similar to the Watch’s ForceTouch. Apple’s calling the iPhone version 3D touch.

3D Touch

This is going to confuse a lot of moms and dads. Heralded as “the new generation of multitouch,” this combination of hardware, software, and design innovation allows the iPhone to detect how hard you press on the screen. With this new input variable, apps can recognize a new layer of interaction. For instance, you can push hard on the Mail app and see a menu of choices.

iPhone 6S Plus: Everything You Need to Know About Apple’s More Powerful Monster

At first, it’ll take some getting used to since the iPhone will do new things that you haven’t seen before. Over time, however, you can imagine how app developers will come up with all kinds of quicker, more convenient user experience designs. 3D Touch looks like it’ll work great for previewing messages and links in the short term. Down the line, the feature will undoubtedly change how we play games on iPhone.

Camera

As we expected, the new iPhone 6S Plus will get a big boost with a 12-megapixel iSight camera. That comes with 50-percent more pixels and 50-percent more focus pixels for faster autofocus. All kinds of technical details that Apple says you “don’t need to know about”-including something called “deep trench isolation”-also ensure more detailed and more natural-looking photos. The bigger sensor also allows for bigger panoramas, like 64-megapixel big.

But the big upgrade is 4K video capabilities in the new iPhone. The breaks out into 8-million pixels per frame. Which, wow, so many big numbers it’s hard to tell what matters.

The front camera also gets an upgrade. It’ll be 5-megapixel FaceTime HD camera that uses the phone’s Retina display for a flash for “detailed selfies.” Apple claims that the new capabilities will now let the display light up 3-times brighter for a flash that’s comparable to the TrueTone flash on the back. Thanks to the new 3D Touch capabilities, Apple is also offering a feature called “Live Photos which basically let you make little animated GIFs when you hold down on the screen. Live Photos is on by default and captures 1.5-seconds on either end of the shutter.

Guts
The new iPhone 6S Plus will include Apple’s new 64-bit A9 chip, which the company claims is 70-percent faster at CPU tasks and 90-percent faster at graphics tasks. The performance looked fantastic in an on-stage gaming demo. The iPhone 6S Plus also comes with a new M9 motion coprocessor built into the A9 chip. New Touch ID hardware also promises to be twice as fast as the last generation.

The wireless chip is also getting an upgrade. New 300-Mbps LTE technology will be up to twice as fast as the last iPhone. There are now up to 23 LTE bands available, and the 866-Mpbs 802.11 ac wifi is twice as fast.

Oh, and there are new charging docks and cases available.

Price

As usual, Apple is bumping the old phones down a hundred bucks. So the new iPhone 6S Plus will start at $300 with a two-year contract. That breaks down to about $31 a month on a typical installment plan. Apple is offering a new iPhone upgrade program for $32 a month that lets you choose a carrier and get an unlocked phone with AppleCare+. Apple says that means you can upgrade your iPhone every year, which is a similar promise that some carriers already make but hey, if you can avoid that red tape you should.

Punjab to get one more world class stadium, architects to develop facility in Mullanpur

MOHALI: Punjab will have another world class cricket stadium as the state cricket Association (PCA) is all set to invite the architects to develop the facility in Mullanpur, near here.

Punjab already has a wonderful cricket facility in Mohali’s PCA Stadium, which hosted the World Cup semifinal between India and Pakistan in March this year.”Yes, we are going to shortly start this process. We will invite architects who have the experience of constructing world-class stadiums and then shortlist them,” PCA’s Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier (retd) Gurdeep Singh Sandhu told reporters here today.

In February this year, PCA’s Executive Committee met under the Chairmanship of its President I S Bindra here and decided to build a modern Cricket stadium at Mullanpur, on the outskirts of Chandigarh.

“We have acquired 42 acres of free hold land at Mullanpur Development Scheme in the demarcated Sports and leisure area, approximately 2-3 kms from the outskirts of Chandigarh alongside the 450 feet wide proposed four way lane highway,” Sandhu, who has also served as Chairman, Indian Army Sports Control Board, said.

Sandhu said that the Mullanpur stadium would have world class facilities.

“PCA has become an institution, with big reputation. On March 30, it hosted World Cup semi-finals, a mega event, between India and Pakistan at its Mohali stadium, which besides the Prime Ministers of the two nations was watched by a hosts of dignitaries around the globe. Therefore, keeping our growing reputation in mind, the Mullanpur stadium will be ultra modern and world class,” said Sandhu, former manager of the Indian hockey team.

Showing some of the comments penned down by the dignitaries in the PCA’s visitors book on March 30, Sandhu said all of them were highly impressed with the way PCA had managed hosting the mega semi-final.

“Always feels like you are back at home when you visit PCA,” were the comments of ICC CEO, Haroon Lorgat.

The BCCI chief Shashank Manohar wrote “Love this place (PCA)” while parliamentarian Shashi Tharoor wrote “splendid stadium”.

“My fondest and most exciting cricketing memories are at this superbly wonderful PCA stadium in Mohali. The facilities, administration and fantastic hospitality make this place the Lords of India,” wrote business tycoon and MP, Vijay Mallya.

Sandhu, who joined PCA after retiring from the Army in 1996, said the construction of Mullanpur stadium would take atleast 4-5 years.

The Mohali stadium, built in 1992, is located in thick of a residential colony and lacks proper parking facilities.

The new stadia would have two grounds — for matches and practice — and also a state of the art cricket academy which would attract trainees from associate and affiliated members of the ICC under the programme of globlisation of Cricket, Sandhu said.
