Avoid High-Fat Diet When You Are Expecting

Avoid High-Fat Diet When You Are Expecting

In many Indian households a high-fat diet is considered to be nutritious for expecting mothers. A recent study has discovered that high-fat diet and obesity during pregnancy compromise the blood-forming stem cell system in the liver of the developing baby. This is responsible for creating and sustaining lifelong blood and immune system function.

Daniel L. Marks, professor of pediatric endocrinology at Oregon-based OHSU’s Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, said: “The results offer a model for testing whether the effects of a high-fat diet and obesity can be repaired through dietary intervention, a key question when extrapolating this data to human populations.”

A team led by Mark created a mouse model, which mimics the high-fat diet that is consumed by pregnant women. During the study, the researchers demonstrated that maternal overnutrition in mice drastically reduced the size of the foetal liver.

Marks joined hands with another stem cell expert Peter Kurre on the basis of this information. The duo then discovered the complex changes that occur as a result of maternal high-fat diet and obesity put significant constraints on the growth of blood stem cells in the foetal liver. This finally develops the immune system.

Kurre also added that “in light of the spreading western-style, high-fat diet and accompanying obesity epidemic, this study highlights the need to better understand the previous unrecognised susceptibility of the stem and progenitor cell system.”

According to the researchers, this study will pave way for broad context for rise in immune disease and allergic disposition in kids. (Image: Thinkstock)

Apple Readying ‘Ultra-Thin’ Retina MacBook Air And Apple Watch In Spring 2015

Apple Readying ‘Ultra-Thin’ Retina MacBook Air And Apple Watch In Spring 2015

Apple’s long-rumoured Retina MacBook Air may finally be getting a launch next year following a new report that it will enter mass production in spring 2015, along with the Apple Watch.

Citing anonymous sources on the supply chain side, Digitimes reports that a 12-inch Retina MacBook Air featuring Intel’s new Broadwell processor is on the way.

The notebook, which has been rumoured to exist since 2012, has been pushed back due to the slow supply of components from the Cupertino-based company’s supply chain players, according to the report, an issue that it says has been resolved.

The Retina MacBook Air is expected to be ultra-thin and lighter than previous MacBook Air models in addition to being “fanless”, allowing for a redesigned chassis. Following the success of recent iPhones and iPads, Apple will apparently offer it in gold and two different shades of grey.

According to the report, the Retina MacBook Air is being manufactured by Quanta Computer and is expected to be a high-end product that will initially be available in limited supply.

Samsung Galaxy S6: This One May Be A Curvy Offering

Samsung Galaxy S6: This One May Be A Curvy Offering

The Samsung Galaxy S6 will be made entirely or partially of metal – that’s something that’s been rumored for months.

Italian site Samsung HD Blog agrees, saying that the Galaxy S6 will have a unibody aluminum chassis.

But even more interesting is the site’s claim that the next Galaxy flagship – not a variant or a Galaxy S6 Edge – will feature a unique curved display.

This display will be curved on both edges, much like an analyst predicted in November, but not in quite the same way that the Galaxy Note Edge is, the site says.

Too good to be true

The Galaxy S6’s curves will reportedly be “different” from the Note Edge so that it won’t be difficult to grip, the site says. That may mean more subtle curves, or something else.

The flagship will reportedly come in two variants, one with a Snapdragon 810 chip and one with an Exynos 7, but the report says both will be called the Galaxy S6 and both will be doubly curved.

The Italian site’s info comes from what Google translates as “reliable sources,” though this does seem too good to be true.

Then again, we’ve been hearing all along that the Galaxy S6 will be radically different. Hopefully we’ll find out at CES 2015.

Toshiba Outs First Windows 8 Tablet WT-8 For Rs 15,490

Toshiba Outs First Windows 8 Tablet WT-8 For Rs 15,490

Toshiba introduced its first-ever 4K-powered laptop in the country earlier this year, and now the company has dived into the Windows tablet space with WT-8. Incidentally, WT-8 is Toshiba’s first tablet offering in the Windows space and ranks alongside plethora of Windows slate available in the country these days.

The tablet is an 8 inch display with 1280x800p resolution which runs on the Microsoft Windows platform. The device will be available exclusively on Amazon in the country for a price of Rs 15,490.

Much like the other Windows products, WT-8 is packed with an Intel Atom processor, paired with 1GB RAM and offers expandable 128GB storage. In addition to that, the slate offers Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and Wireless display support as well. There’s a 5 MP camera on the back and a 1.2MP front snapper. It’s nowhere close to the sleek Lenovo Tab S8 or an even iPads with its 9.48mm thickness, and weighing 385 grams.

Many brands like iBall, Notion Ink, Dell and Acer among others have managed to make their own slates, and there prices varies anywhere between Rs 12,000 to Rs 30,000. Going forward, we expect tablets to be priced as low as Rs 6,100 (i.e. $100), says Microsoft.

Having said that we’ve never been fans of an 8-inch Windows tablet due to its software deficiency and the form factor itself doesn’t make much sense from product point of view.

Airtel Launches Wi-Fi Dongle During GOSF 2014

The last year’s GOSF wasn’t that exciting, but it seems that the GOSF 2014 might be different. A lot of interesting stuff has been lined up for the three day online shopping carnival. CouponzGuru is expecting that the event will have three lakh visitors in 3 days.

So, as we wait for the frenzy to be begin, here’s an interesting offer from the Airtel.

Sony To Bring Android TVs In Early 2015: Rumor

Sony To Bring Android TVs In Early 2015: Rumor

Google first announced Android TV back in June during the annual I/O event. It was said that a myriad of big ticket manufacturers will be on board to support the new media platform, with the likes of Razer being the first to announce it. A new rumor today is suggesting that Sony could also be one of the companies interested in launching hardware based on the platform, possibly during next month’s CES 2015 event.

Something like this would be suited for the CES event as a wide range of manufacturers will be present during the event to show off their latest innovations. Android TV based hardware is currently sold only by Google in the form of the Nexus Player, but the addition of Sony and other manufacturers could mean that the platform will be more accessible to consumers across the globe.

We don’t have specific information on what to expect from Sony’s latest offering, but it seems like it will be similar to previous Android TV (known as Google TV) offerings with the hardware integrated into their televisions. It is being said that Sony will offer Android TVs in varying display resolutions, ranging from 4K to 1080p depending on the market. Either way, don’t expect these televisions to go gentle on your wallets.

Android TV relies heavily on Google services and offers content through the Play Store, Play Movies, Play Music etc. Given the number of gaming titles available on Google’s app hub, the device can also be used as a gaming console when coupled with a wireless Bluetooth controller. Expect the likes of Samsung and LG to join the Android TV bandwagon sometime soon.

Report: Sony Leak Traced To A Bangkok Hotel

Report: Sony Leak Traced To A Bangkok Hotel

According to Bloomberg, the source of the huge Sony Pictures leak has been traced to a five-star hotel in Thailand’s capital. Leaching off of the St. Regis hotel’s high-speed wi-fi, the hackers, currently believed the work of the North Korea-linked group DarkSeoul, carried out their devastating and embarrassing attack, leaking 47,000 SSNs and other sensitive information.

The source, who remains unnamed in Bloomberg’s report, says it’s currently unknown if the hack was carried in a guest room or in a public area. Cybersecurity experts traced the “digital footprints” of the hackers to this location though these same experts are not ruling out the possibility that the leak was carried out remotely and only taking advantage of the hotel’s open network. Starwood Hotels & Resorts owns and operates the specific hotel that was used in the attack but has yet to issue any official statement regarding these claims.

Of course, the exact reasons why the attack occurred remains unclear, but it seems to be more a personal grudge than an attempt to make money, according to Bloomberg. Earlier today, North Korea denied allegations that they were involved but called the cyberattack a “righteous deed.” If the these attacks are deemed state-sponsored, it would definitely be a page turner in the big book of cyber warfare.

The only people attempting to lighten the mood surrounding these hacks are also the two people at the center of it-namely Seth Rogen and James Franco, staring in the film “The Interview,” which protrays the attempted assassination of Kim Jong-un. The duo appeared on SNL together last night to get “out in the open” all of the embarrassing information that was bound to leak soon.

Although these hackers probably have no interest in Rogen and Franco’s nearly nude Christmas cards, it’s still unclear how this crippling leak will impact Sony and cyber security in the future.
